Genno (, Gennô?) is a legendary trap-making ninja from Tonbogakure. Even in his old age, merely hours before his naturally-caused death, he was an excellent shinobi. He was able to set up a multi-layered trap that fooled the ANBU, Tsunade, and even nearly stumped Shikamaru Nara. He could also match Rock Lee in taijutsu, albeit using a smoke bomb to even the odds. He was able to do all this while suffering from a pain so intense that Ino was forced to release her Mind Body Switch Technique immediately upon entering his body.
While Jiraiya led an attack on Tonbogakure thirty years previously, Genno was in Konoha planting explosives. Tonbogakure called a cease-fire and was later annihilated by another village, however, and he never got the chance to use them. Genno returned thirty years under the guise of a carpenter from Sunagakure. He attempted to finish his job by detonating the Hokage Monument, which would have buried the village under rock and sand, partly because he was near death and didn't want such an elaborate trap to go to waste, though mainly for revenge for the death of his son, who died in the war with his village.
However, upon returning to finish the job, Genno met Naruto Uzumaki, who deeply resembled Genno's late son (he told Naruto it was his still-living grandson). Without telling anybody, Genno deviated from his original plan and turned it into a game. He acted out his original elaborate plan, down to every last twist and detail, but he rigged the bombs in the monument, as well as any other potentially devastating trap, so that they would barely leave a mark or not work whatsoever. Genno wanted the Konoha 11, especially Naruto, to enjoy solving the "treasure hunt" he always wanted to plan for his grandson. He died of natural causes shortly after the Konoha 11 removed or disarmed all the tags and apprehended him.
