Backround
In order to create the ultimate weapon for the Sand Village, his father ordered the One-Tailed Shukaku to be sealed within hide during his birth. Chiyo was responsible for the task, but Gaara’s mother, Karura’s, life was sacrificed in the process. She cursed Sunagakure and wished Gaara to avenge her death.
Gaara was named by his mother and his name roughly translates to “self loving carnage.” The character above Gaara’s left eye is the word for ‘love’ from his name. The Shukaku threatened in anyway and has led to many instances where villagers were injured or killed. Even though Gaara did not do so intentionally, his father began to view him as a failed experiment and a threat to the village.
Yashamaru was Karura’s brother and Gaara’s main caretaker after her death. He showed kindness to Gaara but actually blamed him for his sister’s death. When the Fourth Kazekage gave him the choice of personally assassinating Gaara, Yashamaru did not hesitate to comply. However, Yashamaru failed and was killed. Before he died, he told Gaara that his mother never loved him and neither did he. The incident pushed Gaara over the edge and made him into the psychopath as he is seen in the first part of the series.
Part 1
Gaara was on team Baki with Temari and Kankuro.
They go to the Chuunin exams and pass the first to with ease.
Gaara fought and killed one of the Rain ninja groups.
He also fights Lee, Gaara wins but is interuped in killing Lee by Guy.
In the finals, Gaara fights Sasuke and though Sasuke is the first to ever injure Gaara, the battle is never finished.
While changing and changed into Shukaku he fights Naruto, Naruto wins. This teaches Gaara that friends can make you powerful and that chages Gaara's whole out look.
Later he comes to Lee's rescue against Kimimaro, the battle ends in Kimimaro's death.
Part 2
Gaara becomes the Kazekage.
When he tries to protect the city from Deidara he is captured.
the members of Akatsuki extract Shukaku from his body, this kills him.
Chiyo gives him her life so that he can continue to protect Sunagakure.
